EDWARD J. LIEVENS


Edward Julius Lievens, Jr. of Austin died peacefully on July 9, 2014 with family members at his bedside. He was born November 24, 1933 in South Bend, Indiana to Edward Julius Lievens, Sr., and Stephanie (Lesniewicz) Lievens.

He graduated from Central High School as Valedictorian, and was a 1955 Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. In 1965, he completed the "Alfred P. Sloan Fellows Program" and received a Master's Degree in Industrial Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Mr. Lievens began his aeronautical career with Douglas Aircraft Company at the White Sands Proving Grounds in New Mexico, then with Bendix Corporation in Indiana, followed by Martin Marietta in Maryland. In 1961, he began his federal service with NASA by assisting in the development of the Saturn V rocket, and he later joined the U.S. Department of Energy. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter designated Mr. Lievens as a charter member of the "Senior Executive Service" (SES) of the United States of America.

In 1955, "Ed" married Virginia Lee Myler in the Notre Dame Cathedral and from that marriage four children were born: Edward J. Lievens, III, Dr. Cynthia (Lievens) Vaughn, James C. Lievens, and Robert J. Lievens. In 1967, he married Judith Ann Behr and from that marriage two children were born: Dr. Christopher W. Lievens and Dr. William E. Lievens. He is survived by all along with ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

After a 4:30 PM reception with family members, a Rosary will be said in his honor on Sunday July 13th at 5:00 PM in the Chapel of the Harrell Funeral Home located at 4435 Frontier Trail. His Memorial Mass will commence at 10:00 AM on Monday morning, July 14th at the Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church located at 4800 Convict Hill.
