VELMA C. (WOODS) JORDAN

May 6, 1924 - April 9, 2012
SOUTH BEND - Velma C. Jordan, 87, was born into this life on May 6, 1924, to her loving parents, Rev. Willie Woods and Rosa White in Wynee, Arkansas, and was born to eternal life on April 9, 2012. She accepted Christ at an early age under the pastorship of the late Elder McNeely.

She later was a faithful member of the Believers Church of God In Christ under the leadership of the late Elder Joseph Jennings. Our beloved Velma, affectionately known as "Aunt Gal" to family and friends, was the epitome of living with strength, courage, determination, love and tenacity. She was fun, outgoing, warm, and inviting. Her smile was radiant and contagious. Velma could be cantankerous at times; however, she brought joy to many with her smile and warmness. To know her was to love her. Loving her and being loved by her was a blessing. A person of strong opinion, Gal was never without words, and her love of the Word of God was known to many. Even in her later years, Gal could quote scriptures without hesitation. Often times she was called upon to remember various facts regarding the family.

She attended Central High School in South Bend and, in 1948, she married Ivory Jordan and to that union two children were born.

She worked at various jobs throughout her lifetime. Velma and her sister, the late Lillie Mae Thomas, were quite a pair. They both loved the Lord and it was not uncommon to see Velma at the piano playing as her sister would offer songs of praise and worship unto the Lord. What a sight to behold! In addition, Velma was known for renaming her many nephews with some very odds names. She was a person who did not like storms, and many times she would be seen marching down Washington Street with her nephews and nieces in tow to the police station seeking safety. Early Monday morning, on April 9, 2012, the one we loved and knew departed this life at Cardinal Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and stepped across the threshold we call death. She is at peace with God now for we know that ...all things work together for the good of them that love him...

Velma Jordan was preceded in death by her husband, Ivory Jordan; two sons, Anthony and Ivory Lamar Jordan; two sisters, Rennie Lee Jackson, Missionary Lille Mae Thomas; two brothers, James White and Horace Woods; and a grandson.

Velma leaves to cherish her memory one grandson, two sisters-in-law, Mother Della White and Mrs. Lillie Fisher, many nephews and nieces and a host of other relatives, friends and loved ones. A special word of gratitude to her special friends at Cardinal Nursing and Rehabilitation for taking such good care of Velma. The family wishes to thank Crystal Bowers from Real Service and Patt Johnson as well. Homegoing Celebration will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Alford's Mortuary, with viewing occurring one hour prior to services at the chapel. Arrangements have been entrusted to Alford's Mortuary where messages of condolence may be e-mailed to Alfordsmortuary@att.net, c/o the Jordan family.
