Wyze Nicks Jr.

Dec. 14, 1941 - Jul. 22, 2016

Wyze Nicks, Jr., 74, residing in South Bend, passed away at 3:40 am Friday, July 22, 2016 in Hospice House. He was born December 14, 1941 in Greenwood, Mississippi to the late Wyze and Alma (O'Bannon) Nicks, Sr.

Wyze moved with his family to the South Bend area in 1943, where he lived the rest of his lifetime. After graduating from high school, he served his country honorably in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era. On September 5, 1970 in South Bend, he married the former Barbara J. Hampton, who survives.

In addition to his loving wife of 45 years, Wyze is survived by one son, Cory D. (Christy) Nicks of South Bend; six grandchildren, Ashlie, Isaiah, Johnathen, Terrell, Amaya and Alyssa; one sister, Laura Scott of South Bend; and four brothers, Comadore (Marcia) Nicks of Indianapolis, William “Bill” (Patty) Nicks and Lee Nicks, both of South Bend and Ben L. Nicks of Mesa, AZ; as well as a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Blanche Stanley.

Wyze worked as a custodian for the South Bend Community School Corporation, mostly at Jackson Middle School, until he retired in 2004. He was a long time member of Olivet African Methodist Episcopal Church in South Bend and AmVets Post #66 in South Bend, where he served as Past Post Commander. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge #298. Wyze enjoyed going to the casino and listening to Jazz and Blues Music. He was an avid college and pro football fan, especially the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Chicago Bears. But most of all, Wyze loved his family, especially the grandchildren, and will be greatly missed by all.

Funeral services for Wyze will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, July 30, 2016 in the Palmer Funeral Home - West Chapel, 2702 Lincolnway West, South Bend. Rev. Rick Jackson will officiate.
