ARTHUR EUGENE "GENE" SNYDER

SOUTH BEND - Arthur Eugene "Gene" Snyder, 90, of South Bend, died at 9:05 p.m. Saturday, September 11, 2010, in his residence in Southfield Village. Gene was born June 18, 1920, in South Bend, to the late Sarah (Groff) and Lee H. Snyder, and was a lifetime area resident.

On October 30, 1948, in South Bend, he married Margaret A. "Maggie" Smith, who preceded him in death December 8, 2001. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy A. Snyder, and a sister, Anne Kahn. He is survived by two daughters, Patricia L. DeClue (William) of Lander, WY, and Diane K. Sloan (Jon) of Hollywood, FL; one son, Richard E. Snyder (Chantelle) of South Bend; and five grandchildren, Duke (Didi) DeClue, Rex Declue, Erik DeClue, Hayley O'Bryan and Quincy O'Bryan.

Gene was a 1938 graduate of South Bend Central High School and a 1942 graduate of Purdue University. He served four years as an officer in the Army Quartermaster Corps during World War II.

From 1946 until 1965 he managed the George Dodd Farm and subsequently operated the Arthur Snyder Farm, Inc., near South Bend until 2002. He was a member of St. Joseph Lodge #45 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, First United Methodist Church of South Bend, and the Downtown South Bend Rotary Club.

Cremation will take place at Welsheimer Crematory, with a memorial service to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church or charity of the donor's choice. Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., is assisting the family with arrangements.
