DOROTHY ALICE (SHAFFER) BUCKNELL age 88 of Klinger Lake, Sturgis, Michigan passed away unexpectedly Wednesday morning April 2, 2008 at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis.

She was born January 31, 1920 in South Bend, Indiana a daughter of the late Adolph & Pearl (Huey) Shaffer.

On July 7, 1946 she married Richard R. Bucknell in South Bend, Indiana.
He died January 18, 2001.

Dorothy graduated from Central High School in South Bend. She continued her education at Manchester College in North Manchester, Indiana where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and she later received her Masters Degree in Education from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. Dorothy taught in elementary grades in South Bend and Sturgis.

She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis where she was a member of Women’s Society and had held different offices. Dorothy was also a member of the Gift Shop Guild of the Sturgis Hospital Auxiliary. Since 1946 she had been a member of the Sturgis Women’s Club making her one of its longest memberships.

She is survived by 2 Daughters; Suann (Roger) Knauss of Sturgis, Jane (Audy) Conner of Kalamazoo, 1 Son; James (Colleen) Bucknell of Bessemer, 10 Grandchildren; Brian Klingler of Sturgis, Steve (Fiancée Jade Couch) Klingler of Sturgis, Nate’ (Bernard) Hall of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Ross Conner of Kalamazoo, Trey Conner of Kalamazoo, Clint (Kristin) Bucknell of Yakima, Washington, Luke Bucknell of Kalamazoo, Jake Bucknell of Bessemer, Kurt Bucknell of Bessemer and Chad Bucknell of Bessemer, 1 Great Grandchild; Keylin Conner of Kalamazoo, 2 Step-Grandchildren; Lynn (Jamie) Lego of Sturgis and Mike (Fiancée Amanda Wallen) Knauss of Sturgis, 3 Step-Great Grandchildren; Austin Knauss, Ashley Knauss and Tatum Harris all of Sturgis, 1 Brother; Donald Shaffer of Florida and several nieces and nephews.

Her parents, husband, 4 sisters and 1 brother preceded her in death.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Monday at the HACKMAN-Foglesong Funeral Home of Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Dorothy Bucknell will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church of Sturgis. The Rev. Robert Keim will officiate. Entombment will follow the service in the family mausoleum at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis.

The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mrs. Bucknell’s memory consider the First United Methodist Church, 200 Pleasant Ave., Sturgis, MI 49091. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
