SOUTH BEND - Francis M. Sellers, M.D., 87, of South Bend passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2009 in his residence following an extended illness. Dr. Sellers was born July 21, 1928 in Anderson, IN to the late LeRoy and Chloe (Danforth) Sellers and moved with the family to South Bend in 1924.

On June 27, 1959 in Berne, IN he married Marcile Sprunger and they spent 49 wonderful years together. She survives along with a daughter, Susan J. Sellers-Hurst and a grandson, James Francis Hurst.

Dr. Sellers graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1938 and from the University of Notre Dame (cum laude) in 1942. He received his M.D. degree from Northwestern University Medical School in 1946. His internship was served at Passavant Memorial Hospital, Chicago. In 1949 he was a resident in anesthesiology at Northwestern. He completed a fellowship in dermatology at Cook County Hospital, Chicago, in 1965. Dr. Sellers was a family practice physician for one year, 1950, in Mt. Morris, IL. In 1951 he came to South Bend where he practiced until 1965. He was the university physician at Notre Dame from 1971 - 1975. He served in the Illinois National Guard and then in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a Captain during World War II. During the Korean War he served in the U.S. Air Force (MC). He returned to the USAF at Grissom Air Force Base as a Colonel (Flight Surgeon) from 1975 - 1977.

Dr. Sellers was a member of the St. Joseph County Medical Society, Indiana State Medical Association, American Medical Association, American Academy of Dermatology, and Chicago Dermatological Society. In 1977 he retired from active practice and enjoyed the ponds, lake and, woods of property in northern Michigan. He also enjoyed traveling the world and visiting other cultures. He was an avid reader and enjoyed classical music. He will be remembered for his dedication, caring, and sense of humor.

The family extends their gratitude to the Hospice staff for their kind and compassionate care.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 7th in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd. with Rev. David P. Gerth officiating. Entombment will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may call from 4 until 7 p.m. today, March 6th in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Ct., South Bend, IN, 46637 or the charity of the donor's choice.
