EDWARD A. EVERETT

Nov. 22, 1908 - June 21, 2010
SOUTH BEND - Edward A. Everett Jr., 101, died June 21, 2010, at Hubbard Hill Estates in Elkhart, Indiana. He was born November 22, 1908, to Edward A. and Katherine (Trainor) Everett in Goshen, along with five siblings, Genevieve, Julia, Raymond, James and Bernard. The family moved to Holland, Michigan, then to South Bend when Ed was in 7th grade.

He graduated from South Bend High School and the University of Notre Dame (1932).

After college he spent two years in Chicago selling ad space for the Herald Examiner.

On October 15, 1936, he married Hazel L. Troy, who preceded him in death on September 13, 1997, after 61 wonderful years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by a son, Michael W. Everett (9/5/96).

Surviving children are David L. Everett (Rosetta), Elkhart, Edward A. Everett III (Kitty Rose), Mishawaka, Thomas J. Everett, Osceola, and Mary Kathryn Hollingsworth (Tim), Yukon, OK. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Ed's real estate career began in South Bend, working for Richard Gardner. During WW II he was in charge of the Federal Office of Rent Control for Northern Indiana.

After that he met George Cressy, when they both worked for Colpaert Realty. In October 1946 they founded Cressy & Everett Real Estate. Together they developed the Meadowview subdivision on the south side of South Bend, and Winding Brook Park, north of Mishawaka. At various times Ed served as president of the South Bend Mishawaka Board of Realtors and the Multiple Listing Service. In 1985 he was named South Bend Mishawaka Realtor of the Year.

A devout Catholic, he also served as president of Catholic Charities and was an enthusiastic supporter of The Indian Schools and Ministries in the western U.S.

Very active in his retirement years, Ed and Hazel spent summers on Shavehead Lake and winters in Central Florida, where his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and numerous friends enjoyed his wit, generosity, and interesting stories. He was a regular volunteer for St. Vincent DePaul and a longtime driver for Meals on Wheels, until age 98. Known for his dry sense of humor, incredible charm, and positive attitude, he will be greatly missed by many!

Per his wishes, his body was donated to IU Medical Center. A memorial Mass will be held at 11 AM Monday, June 28, 2010, in St. Anthony de Padua Church, 2114 E. Jefferson Blvd., South Bend. Visitation will be prior in the church vestibule from 10-11 AM. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Real Services-Kitchen Campaign, PO 1835, South Bend, IN 46634; to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637; or to St. Anthony's.
