MISHAWAKA — Hazel (Ward) Puterbaugh, 87, of Crestwood of Tanglewood Trace, formerly of Blair Hills, Mishawaka, Ind., died at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, May 8, in her residence. Mrs. Puterbaugh was a social worker and a homemaker. She was born on Dec. 29, 1910, in South Bend, Ind., to Grace (Showalter) and Charles Ward, who both preceded her in death. She had been a South Bend area resident for most of her life.

On Aug. 22, 1936, in South Bend, as Hazel Ward, she married Myron D. Puterbaugh, who preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 1997. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Jane Puterbaugh in 1938. Mrs. Puterbaugh is survived by a daughter, Sara A. (Ted) Pinkerton of Hamilton, Ohio; two sons, David W. (Jan) Puterbaugh of Alliance, Ohio, and Richard A. (Marcia) Puterbaugh of Mishawaka, Ind.; eight grandchildren, Judson, John and Eric Puterbaugh, Peter Adams, Jennifer Gray, Candace Brown, Nicholas Hartley and Jill Metcalfe; six great-grandchildren; and by a brother, William W. (Mary Jane) Ward of Troy, Ohio. 

Mrs. Puterbaugh was a graduate of South Bend Central High School and DePauw University. She was an officer for the South Bend College of Commerce and was active in its auxiliary. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, South Bend, Thalia Sorority, PEO Sisterhood, Kiwanianne Club of Mish-a-Bend, Schuyler Colfax Chapter of the DAR, Hoosier Art Patrons, the Watercolor Society and Northern Indiana Artists. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 13, in the chapel of the First Presbyterian Church, South Bend, with Rev. David Morrow officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
