Betty Ann Chmilewski (Gapinski)

Betty A (Chmilewski) Gapinski

May 10, 1928 ~ September 26, 2023 (age 95)

Betty A. (Chmilewski) Gapinski, 95 years old, passed away on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at StoryPoint in Granger.

Betty was born on May 10, 1928 in South Bend to the late Frank and Teresa (Mazure) Chmilewski. On November 6, 1948, Betty married the love of her life, Aloysius Gapinski, who preceded her in death.  She is also preceded in death by her daughter, Cheryl Carr Gapinski; son, Gerald Gapinski; sister, Mildred Klosowski; and her brother, Frank Chmilewski.

Left to cherish the memory of Betty is her daughter, Carol (Tom) Downey; her grandchildren, John, Jennifer, Gerald (JJ), Samantha, Gary, Abby, and Joshua; her great-grandchildren, Taylor, Alexis, Kendall, Mason, Nathan, Maverick, Chase, Olivia, Paisley, and Harper; her son-in-law, James (Patty) Carr; and her daughter-in-law, Lisa Gapinski.

Betty was a faithful member of Saint Mathew Parish in South Bend and attended Mass regularly until her health began to fail.  She had many friends and enjoyed meeting them frequently to play Euchre and board games. She liked to dance and could be found moving around the dance floor with her beloved husband at PNA #83, Saints Casimer and Adalbert parish halls, and other local venues where polka bands were playing. Betty also enjoyed going on bus trips to the Casinos in Gary, IN and Joliet, IL

In addition to spending time with her descendants, she thoroughly enjoyed being in the presence of her extended family members. On many Sundays and holidays, she could be found hosting gatherings or visiting with her sister or sister-in-law’s family’s at their homes.  There is no doubt that she is now surrounded by her family and friends in the presence of God.

Friends and family will be received from 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm Thursday, September 28, 2023 at St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Rd, South Bend, with a Rosary to be prayed at 6:30 pm.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, September 29, 2023 at 10:00am at St. Matthew Cathedral, 1701 Miami Street, South Bend.  Entombment will immediately follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend.

Memorial contributions in honor of Betty A. (Chmilewski) Gapinski may be made out to Traditions Health Hospice, 3555 Park Place W#100, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
