David Walter

David E. Walter May 14, 1923 - May 29, 2014 SOUTH BEND - David E. Walter (90 years young) passed away Thursday (5-29-14) at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka, at 11:15 pm. He was born November 14, 1923, in South Bend.

His parents, Harry and Stella (Murphy) Walter, as well as his older sister (Katie) and brother (Harry Jr.) have all preceded him in death.

He graduated from St. Patrick's Elementary School, South Bend Central High School and Notre Dame University. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II and was honorably discharged following the war.

He married his lifelong sweetheart, Margaret R. Doran, in 1948. They would have celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary this October. They have lived in the same house in South Bend since their marriage. They raised five sons who married and were blessed with 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

David Walter was a member of St. Anthony De Padua parish. He was active in the Boy Scouts for many years. He was a member and past president of the St. Anthony Ushers Club, was a member of the Knights of Columbus as well as an usher at the Notre Dame Stadium for over 40 years. He started his working career at Studebaker Corp., followed by 23 years with Falstaff Brewing, and finally with the South Bend School System in their film center. As head of the Walter Clan, his physical presence will be immeasurably missed by: his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The many memories that he was a part of will have to sustain us until we are all joined together again in heaven.

McGann Hay Funeral Homes is handling the arrangements. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Dave on Tuesday at 10:00 am at St. Anthony dePadua Parish. Visitation will be at 9:00 am at St. Anthony's preceding the Funeral Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to your favorite charity be made.
