Jack Richard Harris

Jack Richard Harris Nov. 30, 1921 - May 10, 2015 SOUTH BEND - Jack Richard Harris was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, November 30, 1921. He grew up in South Bend, Indiana, and at the family lake home on Eagle Lake in Edwardsburg, Michigan. He graduated from Central High School in South Bend and attended Purdue University until joining the U.S. Navy during WW II. On February 6, 1944, he married Frances Elaine Van de Walle in South Bend, Indiana. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Frances (Van de Walle) Harris, and two children, Tom (Janie) Harris and Becky (Dick) Stevens; three grandchildren, Missy (Chris) Johnson, Julia (Patrick) McLane and Jessica Stevens; two great- grandchildren, Hannah and Hailey Johnson; and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ben W. and Lila (Mayfield) Harris, and brothers, Bill Harris and James Harris. Jack had a career as a real estate appraiser. He assisted with his wife's business, The Thieves Market antique mall. He was a member of Toastmasters in Indiana and Venice, Florida. He was a deacon in Westminster Presbyterian Church in South Bend, Indiana, and a member of Venice Presbyterian Church in Florida. Jack and Fran retired to Country Club Estates in Venice, Florida, where they resided for thirty years. They made many good friends there and were very active in the community's events. Recently they moved to assisted living at Village on the Isle in Venice, Florida. Jack will be remembered for his friendly, easy going manner, jokes and willingness to help where needed. Burial will be at Sarasota National Cemetery, Sarasota, Florida.
