ANTHONY B. WITT

April 15, 1931 - May 24, 2009
SOUTH BEND - Mr. Anthony Benjamin Witt Sr., 78, beloved husband, father and grandfather, who resided on Olive Street, South Bend, passed away on Sunday, May 23, 2009, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend. Anthony was born to the union of Arnold and Estella (White) Witt on April 15, 1931, in South Bend, IN.

He graduated from Central High School in 1950.

He then enlisted in the Unites States Navy where he served his country from 1951 until 1959 when he was honorably discharged. He served during the Korean Conflict on the USS Karserg. He then attended Indiana University-Bloomington, graduating with an associate degree in Police Administration and Criminal Justice.

He worked for the St. Joseph County Police Department form 1966 to 1981 as a police officer then served as head of security at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center from 1981 to 1993. He was a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church, and hobbies included hunting, fishing, sail-boating and playing the piano.

Anthony was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Estella Witt, and a daughter, Lisa Witt.

Survivors left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Maria A. Witt; a daughter, Monica M. Witt; two sons, Anthony B. (Sangran) Witt Jr., and Andre Rowell; two grandchildren, Cherrelle Whitmore and Mark Whitmore Jr.; a special friend, Dorothy Ann Woods, and two cousins, Rosie Weaver and Lee Patterson; along with a host of other friends and relatives.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Logan Center and or The Family and Children's Service. Funeral services for Mr. Anthony B. Witt Sr. will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 29th, in Alford's Mortuary, with burial following at Fairview Cemetery. Viewing will take place one hour prior to services in the chapel. Arrangements have been entrusted to Alford's Mortuary where bereavement messages may be e-mailed to [email protected], c/o the Witt family.
