Gregory Gene “Daddy” Wilder

Sept. 16, 1950 - July 11, 2018

SOUTH BEND - Gregory Gene Wilder, 67, affectionately called “Daddy” was born September 16, 1950 in South Bend, IN, to the late Eugene Porter and Hattye Wilder Baldwin. Gregory departed this life on July 11, 2018 at St. Vincent Hospice, Indianapolis, IN.

Attending Central High School, Gregory later enlisted in the Marine Corps, from which he was honorably discharged after two years of service. Gregory held various positions. He was a multi-sports coach for the Urban League and Hansel Center, an adult coordinator at Martin Luther King Center, an entrepreneur of clothes and cars, and he also played semi-pro football with the Logansport Lancers. His passions were a love for pitfalls, cooking, fishing, playing spades, and most importantly holding his family together. On March 29, 1986 he married Cheryl Lynn Smith, a loving and devoted wife for 32 years, who survives.

Between them they shared 10 children: Latish (Todd) Johnson, Jon (Lateese) Williams, Leon Marshall, Latonya Crawford, Alisia Wilder, James Wilder, Tawana (Joe) Easton-Walker, LaJoy Smith, Jason Smith, and Aleesha Potts, 28 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; his loving siblings: James (Michelle) Wilder, Myron (Connie) Wilder, Andre (Terry) Baldwin, Claryce House, John (Lisa) Baldwin, and Jeffery Baldwin; a goddaughter, Yakiera Brown; a godson, Jeron Cornell; sisters-in-law, Lisa Holley, Diatra Stearn, and Etta Johnson; a brother-in-law, Garland (Carla) Smith, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.

Gregory was a member of Greater St. John Missionary Baptist, where he served on the 2nd Sunday Kitchen Committee. He also helped out with the Boy Scouts.

Gregory was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Lea Renee Pritchard; and brother, Dennis Baldwin.

Services will be held at Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church on Monday, July 23, 2018 at 12:00 p.m., with viewing from 11:00 a.m. to noon at Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church.
