Dorothy Hudson (Pritchard) - Class Of 1956

Dorothy Hudson Pritchard

Dec. 11, 1938 - May. 29, 2018

SOUTH BEND - Our beloved Mother Dorothy Ruth Pritchard transitioned from earth to glory at 1:18 pm, on Tuesday, May 29, 2018, surrounded by the family she loved dearly. Dorothy was born December 11, 1938 in Crutchfield, Kentucky to Mildred and Charlie Hudson. In 1940, Mother Pritchard moved with her mother to South Bend, IN. Coming to South Bend, they rented a room above Christ Temple Church of God In Christ. Living above the church, she and her mother heard the joyful sounds of praise and decided to attend a service. It was there, at Christ Temple, where she was introduced to holiness, received the word, and was saved and filled with the Holy Ghost, under the leadership of her Pastor, Superintendent E.A. McNeely.

On June 14, 1980, she was united in Holy Matrimony to Gene Edward Pritchard Sr. They were married for 35 years until his death in 2016.

Dorothy graduated from Central High School of South Bend, IN. She worked for Hansel Center, where she was the Manager of the Senior Citizens Homemakers Program for 35 years, eventually retiring from the South Bend Housing Authority in 2007. She was known for her big smile, boisterous laugh, and engaging personality. She could give a hug that would comfort you in any situation. She was not only a mother to her children, but also to the children in the neighborhood and was affectionately known as Mother “D”.

Mother Pritchard was dedicated to the work of the Lord. She served as Church Mother for 32 years, first at Latter House COGIC where her brother was pastor, then at Revelation COGIC for 18 years under the leadership of Superintendent Robert E. Herron Sr. In 2013, as her health began to decline, Mother Pritchard started attending church with her son, Elder Eric Foster, at Pentecostal Cathedral COGIC under the leadership of Bishop Donald L. Alford Sr.

Along with her husband of 35 years, Gene Edward Pritchard Sr., she was preceded in death by her parents, Evangelist Mildred O. Borders, Charlie Hudson, and stepfather, Johnny Borders; and two brothers, Robert Moses Hudson and Reverend Charles James Hudson.

Mother Pritchard leaves to cherish her memory eight children, Lon Renzell, Huey Lenzell (Olivia), Tojuana Denise, James Arvel (Vera), Elder Eric Terrell, Yakini Lenise, Marcia Elesha, and Gene Jr. (Jackie); 17 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; one brother, Gerry (Ann) Hudson Sr.; five nieces and one nephew, along with a host of special cousins; three very close friends, Barbara Lewis, June Dean, and Lena Malone, and many other loving friends. Special thanks to her caregivers, Ms. Shirley Harris, Ms. Ashley Morrison, Ms. Crystal Saunders, and her great-grand, Malachi Tyler, and all those family and friends who would drop in to share a special moment with her.

Home going services for Mother Pritchard will be held at Pentecostal Cathedral COGIC on Tuesday, June 5, at noon, with a viewing one hour prior to the service. Services will be officiated by Bishop Donald L. Alford Sr.
