William Andrew Aslin

Jun. 23, 1951 - Aug. 21,2004

William A. "Bill" Aslin, 53, of Elkhart, Ind., formerly of Bentley Lane, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 8:49 p.m. Saturday evening, Aug. 21, in his home.

Bill was born on June 23, 1951, in South Bend, to George and June Aslin. His father, George, preceded him in death. His mother, June, survives to cherish his memory.

In the presence of numerous friends and co-workers, Bill, on Oct. 18, 2003, hired a plane to fly over the Notre Dame stadium during the USC game to propose marriage to the love of his life, Claudia (Serafino) Aslin. They were married on June 29, 2004. Claudia survives to cherish their time together and the loving bond they shared.

Also surviving are his stepson, Cullen Nance; stepdaughter, Rachael Kenaga; father and mother-in-law, Joseph and Lila Serafino; brother-in-law, Michael (Theresa) Serafino; and sister-in-law, Cynthia (John) Amos, all of Elkhart.

Other surviving relatives are cousins, Greg (Debbie) Aslin of Aurora, Colo., and Karen Ann (Leonard) McClauglin of Lake Hiawatha, N.J.

Bill graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1969. He attended Ball State but decided to become a nurse. To pursue this calling, he enrolled in and graduated from Southwestern Michigan College. During his early work years, Bill continued his education and became a registered nurse in April 1989.

Bill was a surgical nurse throughout his career. He was employed for 10 years at the former Michiana Community Hospital and for the past 20 years at the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. Over the years Bill came to know and befriend many co-workers. He would always take call or work holidays so co-workers could be with their families.

Bill lived life to the fullest. His hobbies and leisure time interests reflected his zest for life. He loved to cook, work on his trucks and jeeps, take trips to scenic destinations, and socialized with friends. Most of all he loved sports. He played in softball and darts leagues, was an avid golfer, and watched sports as much as possible. Bill was a huge Notre Dame football fan. He bought and refurbished an RV to tailgate with friends at each home game.

Bill leaves many, many friends who will remember his smile, sense of humor, and passion for life.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Aug. 25, in the McGann Funeral Home, University Area Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Road, South Bend, 232-1411. Cremation will follow.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Elkhart County.
