Jo Ann Marie Hoover

Central 1944 JoAnn M Hoover

May 7, 1926 - July 19, 2016

SOUTH BEND - JoAnn Marie Hoover, 90, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2016. A lifelong resident of South Bend, JoAnn was born May 7, 1926, the daughter of Ralph and Inez (Hecht) Hoover. JoAnn graduated from Central High School in 1944 and worked at Bendix part time while in high school. She went on to gain full employment with Bendix, where she worked as an Office Supervisor, retiring from Bendix after 38 years of service. She was a member of the Bendix Salaried Retirees Club. JoAnn loved sports--especially playing golf, bowling, and cheering for the Notre Dame Irish, the Michigan Wolverines and the Detroit Tigers. A very social person, she enjoyed the camaraderie she found while living at Southfield Village and loved to tease and banter with her caregivers. She told them about her childhood and especially about her beloved mother Inez who could do anything, never complained, and made the best canned tomatoes and baked the most delicious bread. JoAnn had a contagious smile and a boisterous laugh that will be remembered by many. Her love of animals was apparent: she had a seed filled bird feeder outside her window and always had a supply of dog treats eagerly looking forward to the days when visitors brought dogs to her room. She also loved children and kept a cache of Dum Dums on hand for them. JoAnn and her family were grateful for the loving care she received at Southfield Village. JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Mary Sweeney, Betty McEntire, Al Hoover, Jane Nicholls, Carol Francis, and Ralph O. Hoover, Jr. Her sister Esther Haack; nieces and nephews Carol Fowler, Sally Durr, Craig Haack, Brian Haack, Christopher Haack, Dwight Hoover, Tim Hoover, Todd Hoover, Rodney Hoover, Gary Nicholls, Tom Francis, Margaret Skinner, and Elizabeth Howard; and her Goddaughters Lori McDonnell Cochrane and Jamie McDonnell Marciano, survive her. Visitation will be held from 11 to 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2016, at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3645 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend. Services for JoAnn will follow at 1 p.m. in the funeral home, with burial to conclude at Highland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Pet Refuge or Hospice.
