Norma Elizabeth Davis (Trimmer)

Central 1933 Norma Elizabeth (Davis) Trimmer

June 30, 1915 - June 28, 2016

SOUTH BEND - Just two days shy of her 101st birthday, Norma Elizabeth (Davis) Trimmer passed away peacefully surrounded by family at Holy Cross Village in Notre Dame, Ind. A life-long resident of the community, Norma was born June 30, 1915, to parents Oliver and Elizabeth Davis. The second oldest and only daughter of six children, she graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1933 and went on to take business classes at the South Bend College of Commerce. In 1934 she was hired as a secretary at the Bendix Corporation, where she met William (Bill) Trimmer. In 1940, Norma and Bill married and in 1946 settled into 417 Tonti St., where they raised three children: Paul William (1942), Thomas Davis (1945), and Carolyn Elizabeth (1951).

Known for her culinary prowess and an avid bridge player (she belonged to several ladies' bridge groups through the years), she also enjoyed gardening and sewing.

Every winter for 33 years, from 1955-1988, she and Bill spent time on Marco Island, Fla., where they enjoyed walking the beach every morning.

Her favorite activity above all, though, was doting on her family, especially her five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. It is this overwhelming and unending generosity, love, and devotion to family, along with her sweet, gentle nature, that will be remembered by all who had the great fortune to call her sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend.

Norma was preceded in death by husband, William E. Trimmer (2004), brothers, Richard Davis (1998) and Ted Davis (2012), and daughter-in-law, Jodie Kay Trimmer (2012). She is survived by brothers, Marvin Davis (South Bend), Paul Davis (South Bend), Don Davis (Orlando, Fla.); son, Paul Trimmer (Elkhart, Ind.), son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Nancy Trimmer (Birmingham, Mich.), and daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Ed Thomas (Fort Myers, Fla.); grandchildren, Kristen Freshley (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Karen Beck (Elkhart, Ind.), Robert (& wife Eva) Trimmer (Elkhart, Ind.), Tom (& wife Lisa) Trimmer, Jr. (Boulder, Co.), and Michelle (& husband Scott) Baby (Wilmette, Ill.); 12 great-grandchildren; and six nieces.

A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 1, at Our Lady of the Holy Cross Chapel in Holy Cross Village. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 and the funeral will begin at 11:00.

Following the Mass, interment will be at Highland Cemetery, 2257 Portage Avenue, South Bend. Memorial donations may be made to Holy Cross Village Foundation-Quinn (P.O. Box 706, Notre Dame, IN 46556), or to a charity of your choice .
