Charles Hubert Slomski

Charles “Charlie” H. Slomski

Jan. 16, 1933 - Jan. 21, 2016

SOUTH BEND - Charles “Charlie” H. Slomski, 83, of South Bend, IN passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at his home on Thursday, January 21, 2016.

He was born in January 16, 1933 in South Bend to the late John S. and Josephine (Kaczmarek) Slomski.

Charles was a lifelong resident of South Bend. On May 18, 1963 Charles married his loving wife, Anna Marie Steif, who survives. He is also survived by his son, Charles Christopher and daughter, Joanne V. Slomski, both of South Bend, IN.

He was preceded in death by his sister and brother in law Betty Lou (Slomski) and John V. Deffley, and his brother John J. Slomski.

He graduated from Central High School in 1952, where he was a proud alumnus. He served our country by joining the U. S. Navy in 1952. Following his honorable discharge in 1956, he worked at Robertson's Department Store, Nyloncraft, Plaid Stamps, Wayne Hardware and South Bend School Corporation, where he retired in 1998. During his working years, he worked part time at Ave Maria Press in Shipping Dept.; Notre Dame Stadium, as an usher and supervisor; at Notre Dame Joyce Center as an usher for many events; a ticket taker at Coveleski Stadium and supervised paper carriers for the distribution of the Penny Saver. Charles was a “people person” who enjoyed meeting and talking with everyone. He also was a hardworking man who made providing for his family a top priority.

After his retirement from the SBSCC, he worked at Notre Dame in the Athletic Department from 1998-2009. He especially enjoyed seeing and talking to all the coaches from the multiple athletic teams. Mr. Mike Brey was one of Charlie's favorite coaches, because he would go out of his way to make him feel like an important part of the Notre Dame Athletic Department. Occasionally, when Charlie and Coach Brey would frequent the same coffee shop, Mr. Brey would pick up Charlie's tab on the sly.

Charles was a member of the Knights of Columbus #553 and a Knights of Columbus 4th Degree member. He was also a member of Golden Clusters (St. Hedwig's) and St. Casimir's Senior Group.

Charles was an avid sports fan. Notre Dame was engrained in his heart and soul. His favorite teams were Notre Dame, Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago Bears. He was really hoping to see the Cubs win the World Series in his lifetime. Charlie will always be remembered for his quick-witted humor.

A Rosary will be prayed at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 24, 2016 at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a visitation will follow from 4 to 7 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 25, 2016 at Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, South Bend.
