SOUTH BEND - John Thomas Norton, 78, passed away Saturday, February 3, 2018 after a courageous battle with scleroderma and heart issues. John was born on November 19, 1939 in Erie Pennsylvania to the late Donald and Bernice (Kintz) Norton. He moved to South Bend when he was three years old and has lived in South Bend since. He is survived by his wife, Susze Norton (Douds); son, Mark Norton and his wife, Tamarah of Vernon Hills, IL; daughter, Kim Norton of Galesburg, IL; and daughter, Dayna Paszkiet (Nichols) and her husband, John Paszkiet of Bristow, VA. John is also survived by five grandchildren: Joshua and Matthew Norton of Vernon Hills, IL and Kairi, Connor and Jackson Paszkiet of Bristow, VA. He was previously married to Sharon Norton (Saxton) of South Bend. John graduated from Central High School in 1958 and joined the Navy soon after, He served 2 years and was stationed in Italy and the Mediterranean. After being honorably discharged in 1960, John entered an apprenticeship for the Plumbers and Pipefitters union (No 172). John became a Journeyman and a certified instructor for the union. John went to own his own company, sold it to Trane Company, and eventually retired in 2000.

John's lifelong passion was anything automotive. He built and raced cars his entire life. He competed in and won races in the Sports Car Club of America and was an active member in the Coachman Auto Club.

He went on to be an active member in the St. Joe Valley Street Rod Group, and he loved his many friends from the automotive world. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 9, 2018, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 52473 U. S. 933 North, South Bend, IN 46637. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the Mass on Friday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Scleroderma Foundation, 300 Rosewood Drive, Suite 105, Danvers, MA 01923. Contribution forms will be available at the church.
