Eugene W. McDonald - Class Of 1964 VIEW PROFILE

Eugene W. McDonald

His life was cut short, by a traffic accident. He was a great man who spent his life helping others. As a pulmonologist/internal medicine (doctor), he put the needs of others above his own. Left to cherish in his memory are his beloved wife, Betty, 2 daughters, Robin, Jessica and 4 step-sons, Jack, Ty, Jamy and Israel, 12 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He will truly be missed.

Dr. Eugene W. McDonald was born June 16, 1946 in Cook County Hospital, Chicago, Ill., to Woodrow Sr. and Jessie McDonald. He died in a car accident on April 18, approximately 10:20 p.m. in Barstow, Calif., but his life had been given to Christ at an early age through baptism at the Greater St. Johns Missionary Baptist Church, South Bend, Ind.

After graduating salutatorian from Central High School in South Bend, Eugene continued his education at Indiana University and graduated in 1969 with a bachelor of science degree in biology and chemistry. Pursuing his life long dream to practice medicine, he attended Indiana University's School of Medicine and received his medical degree in 1973. He was a member of the American Medical Association (AMA).

Eugene married Betty J. Gonzales on Nov. 23, 1981, moved to Michigan City, Ind., and joined Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. There he was vice chairman of the Deacon board. Most recently he was an active member of New Life Community Church, Visalia, Calif. led by Reverend Larry Doddson.

Eugene was employed with the Medical Group of Michigan City from 1980 to 2002 for pulmonary and internal medicine. He was board certified in both fields since 1978. He also served as the medical director for respiratory therapy at St. Anthony and Memorial Hospital in Michigan City. He was Michigan City's first pulmonary specialist. Dr. McDonald opened his private practice in 2002 in Visalia, Calif.

Dr. McDonald received pulmonary fellows from Cleveland Veterans Administration Hospital and Case Western Reserve University in 1976, 1977 and 1978. He was an active member of the Michigan City Rotary Club from 1983-2002. As a member of Pottawattamie Country Club, he enjoyed golfing for relaxation.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow Sr. and Jessie; and his stepmother, Laura.

He leaves to cherish his memories; his loving wife, Betty J. of Michigan City; two daughters, Jessica McDonald of Michigan City and Robin Ann McDonald of Ann Arbor, Mich.; four stepsons, Jack (Wendy) Singleton, Ty (Tammy) Singleton, Jamie (Erlinda) Singleton and Israel (Melinda) Singleton, all of South Bend; three brothers, Woodrow (Dolly) McDonald of Daly City, Calif., Jerome McDonald of South Bend and Paul McDonald of Canton, Ohio; four sisters, Brenda (Reverend Otis) Gary of South Bend, Gail (Caron) Kirkland of South Bend, Cassandra (Raymond) Frazier of Bolingbrook, Ill., and Paula McDonald of Zion, Ill.; his mother-in-law, Rachel Gonzales-Beserra of South Bend; 11 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 3 in the Greater St. Johns Missionary Baptist Church, 101 North Adams St., South Bend, IN 46628. Viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 2 in the Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home, 2702 Lincolnway West, South Bend, IN 46628.

 Eugene was killed in a traffic accident in California in 2004
