SOUTH BEND, IN - Shirley M. Tate, born December 17, 1944 to the late Hattie Pearl Jenkins and James Arthur Tate grew up on Studebaker Street in South Bend, Indiana and graduated from Central High School class of 1963. She attended Indiana University at South Bend and later joined The Associates as a key-punch operator in the late 60s. She was the first black female accepted into the branch's computer programming training class. She worked in the commercial transportation technology division as a programmer analyst for 30 years before transferring to the company's headquarters in Dallas, Texas. The Associates became Citigroup and she retired in 2005 after 40 years of service. Shirley lived on Edison Avenue, served on the board at Maurice Matthys Little League, and took classes at Holy Cross College. She enjoyed traveling and post a family vacation to Hawaii, suffered a major coronary event and died on August 16, 2018. She is survived by her two children, Robin James Hill and Michele Angelique Hill both graduates of Washington High School and residents of Coppell, Texas; and a grandson, Asher Hill.
