Carol Ann Chunn
Oct. 16, 1944 – May 13, 1973
A South Bend woman was killed and her three-year-old son seriously injured early Sunday when their auto crashed through a guard rail on an Oklahoma turnpike and fell down a 40-foot embankment.
Mrs. Carol Chunn, 28 of 803 N. Twyckenham Dr., was dead on arrival about 4 a.m. at Craig General Hospital, Vinita, Okla., about 55 miles east of Tulsa. Hospital officials said she died from massive internal and head injuries.
Her son, David, was admitted in serious condition to St. John’s Hospital, Tulsa, with severe head injuries. The child and his mother were the only occupants of the auto.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol assigned to the Will Rogers Turnpike said Mrs. Chunn apparently fell asleep while driving. They said her car veered off the road about 3:30 a.m. and the wreckage was discovered a few minutes later when a passing motorist noticed the broken guard rail.
Mrs. Chunn’s husband, Joseph, died in May of 1971 from complications resulting from injuries he suffered in a motorcycle-auto accident in South Bend. He was riding the motorcycle when it was struck almost head-on by an auto.
Mrs. Chunn’s survivors include her injured son; her mother, Mrs. Jerome Sholly with whom she lived; and three brothers, Thomas Sholly of Indiana, James of Washington and David of Texas.
The body was taken to the Luginbuel Funeral Home, Vinita, and is to be brought to South Bend for services.

I knew both Carol and Joe from Central Band , and both as friends . They are buried in Highland Cemetery,
and I visit their gravesite whenever I'm in South Bend . Such lovely people who never had a full life.
