Raymond Leonard Sovinski

MISHAWAKA - Former South Bend resident Raymond Leonard Sovinski, 89, of Mishawaka, died Thursday, May 24, 2012, in Michiana Health and Rehabilitation.
Mr. Sovinski was born October 7, 1922, in South Bend, to the late Clara (Kulpinski) and Theodore Sovinski, and was a lifetime area resident. On November 23, 1946, in South Bend, he married Doris J. Hays, who preceded him in death February 26, 2004. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Betty Lile, Richard L. Sovinski and Robert L. Sovinski. He is survived by his children, Joann L. Phillips (Rick) of South Bend, John R. Sovinski (Bridget) of Mishawaka, Robert W. Sovinski (Margot) of Lafayette, IN, and David M. Sovinski (Jean) of Annapolis, MD; 10 grandchildren, Tracy Eaves (John), Jenny Closson (Craig), Michael Sovinski, Kathryn Salter (Jeff), Robin Anderson (Eric), Teddy Sovinski, Jane Sovinski, Christine Jaynes (Trevor), Ryan Sovinski and Andrew Sovinski; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Ramona Sovinski of Bloomington, IN.
Ray served in the US Navy during World War II. He was a former member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. He was a dedicated volunteer, assisting many agencies such as First Steps of Northeast Indiana and the Montessori athletic program. But most of all he will be remembered for his volunteer work with the YWCA and especially the domestic abuse program.
A celebration of Ray's life will be held at 5:30 p.m. today, May 27th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, with Rev. Edward Ruetz, CSC, officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home today from 4:00 p.m. until the time of service. Cremation will take place at Welsheimer Crematory.
