Shirley Mae (Armstrong) Barnes

Shirley M. (Armstrong) Barnes, 95, died comfortably at Sunrise of Wayland on Friday, August 24, 2018 following a period of declining health. She was born in Syracuse, New York on November 18, 1922 the daughter of the late Willis Armstrong and Nina Belle Armstrong. Shirley was the wife for 70 years of the late Robert T. Barnes who died on January 4, 2018. She was the mother of Russell L. Barnes of Lyme, N. H. and David A. Barnes of Denver, CO. She is also survived by her granddaughter Kendall E. Jacobs and her husband Nate Jacobs and their son Arthur Jacobs all of Avada, CO. Sister of Norma Jean Hommel of Columbia, SC.

She has been a resident of Wayland for over 56 years and spent her formative years in Syracuse, NY. She was a Registered Nurse for many years and received her nurses training from Syracuse Memorial Hospital. Shirley was a Captain in the United States Army during World War II and served as a Nurse.

For many years, she was an active participant at the Wayland Town Meetings and often was very outspoken on matters affecting the town. She served in the Wayland Historic District Commission from 1977 until 1998 and on the Records Management Committee for the Town of Wayland from 1993 until 1997. She was a very informed and active member of the Wayland Historical Society and a member of the New England Historic and Genealogical Society of Boston. Shirley was an avid skier, having skied on her honeymoon in 1948 and continuing to ski into her mid eighties.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Shirleys memory may be sent to New England Historic and Genealogical Society, Development Office, 99-101 Newbury St, Boston, MA 02116. At the request of her family, private family services and interment in the Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Syracuse, NY will be held at a later date.
