SOUTH BEND - Herbert S. Porter Jr., 88, died Tuesday morning, September 7th, in Momingside Nursing and Memory Care, South Bend, Indiana. Herbert was born July 6, 1922, in South Bend, Indiana. On June 23, 1945, he married Marietta Winters, who preceded him in death in 2006. Also preceding him in death were his parents, H. Scott and Edith (Wittner) Porter; sister, Jacqueline (Porter) Schellinger; and a great-granddaughter, Kristen Thrasher.

Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Porter (William) Henningfeld of Granger, Indiana, and Kathie Brodbeck Porter (James) Markiewicz of Naples, Florida; two sons, Rev. Michael Scott Porter Skokie, Illinois, and Brian (Karen) Porter of Palmdale, California; grandchildren, Andrew (Elizabeth) Henningfeld, Christina Henningfeld (Tracy) Downey, Katherine Henningfeld (Jason) Higinbotham, Brent Henningfeld, Amy Markiewicz, Daniel (Julie) Markiewicz, Bethany Porter (Mark) Thrasher, Roger Porter and David (Jody) Porter; great-grandchildren, Kiera Downey, Ky|a Downey, Isabella Higinbotham, Jennifer Higinbotham, Emily Markiewicz, Marisa Thrasher, Courtney Thrasher, Ashley Wall, Daniel Wall and Braden Porter.

Herbert was a veteran of World War II stationed in England where he served as a crew chief on a B17 in the Army Air Corps. After his discharge in October 1945, he returned to South Bend where he worked for the family owned OJ Wittner Dairy. Other employment included Baker Furniture, Holland, Michigan, Packaging Corporation of America and Schrader Furniture in South Bend, Indiana. He retired from his position as Purchasing Director at Elkhart General Hospital in 1987. Herbert was a longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, South Bend, where he served as an Elder. Herbert will always be remembered by his family and friends as a devoted and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He was a true Christian whose values will remain in our hearts forever. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff of Morningside Nursing and Memory care for their loving and compassionate care during Herbert's stay at their facility. They were a true blessing to our Dad's life and in our lives.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am. Friday. September 10th, in Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1501 W. Cleveland Road, South Bend, with Rev. James Pitts and Rev. Bruce Haapalainen officiating. Friends may visit with the family two hours prior to the services in the church. Private entombment will be at Saint Joseph Valley Memorial Park Cemetery, Granger, Indiana. ln lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1501 W.
