Arthur Ahrens May, 79, of Old Sycamore Court, Granger, Ind., died at 2:55 p.m. Friday, June 21, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, Ind. He was born on Oct. 18, 1922, in South Bend, to the late Elba (Ahrens) and Arthur Lawrence May. Mr. May was also preceded in death by a son, Ronald.

In 1945, Mr. May married Betty Jane "Boots" Compton, who survives. Mr. May is also survived by three sons, Christopher (Karen) May of Modesto, Calif.. Robert (MaryAnn) May of Springfield, Mo., and Daniel May of Chapel Hill, N.C.: five grandchildren, Colin May of Muncie, Ind., Jeanine May of San Rafael, Calif., Cecily May of Modesto, Sam and Audre May, both of Springfield, Mo.; and by a 1 sister, Lauretta May (F. James) Buck of Mount Prospect, III. Mr. May was a senior partner in the law firm of May, Oberfell and Lorber.

He was a graduate of South Bend Central High School, Indiana University and the University of Notre Dame where he graduated magna cum laude. He was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity, Indiana State Bar Association and the American College of Trial Lawyers. He was a 33rd Degree Mason and was a member of the Scottish Rite and the former Portage Lodge #675 F&A.M. He was a member of the Board of Public Works and was a member of the Optimist Club. He was a Boy Scouts Merit Badge Counselor, served in the U.S. Coast Guard, and was a founding member of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, South Bend.

Services for Mr. May will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, in St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 53270 N. Ironwood Road, South Bend. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, after which a reception will be held in honor of Mr. May in the church. The Welsheimer Funeral Home, 17033 Cleveland Road, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that contributions in memory of Arthur A. May be made to St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 53720 North Ironwood. Road, South Bend, IN 46635.
