In Memory

Kathryn Ann Langell (Hughes) - Class Of 1940

Kathryn Ann Langell (Hughes)

Kathryn A. (Langell) Hughes

Kathryn Anne Hughes, 86, died Feb. 25, 2009, in Ann Arbor, Mich., after a determined battle with Parkinson's Disease and cancer. Born in 1922, in South Bend, she received her degree in 1944 from Indiana University and worked in retail until marrying Dr. Richard Hughes in 1945, eventually settling in West Lafayette to start his private medical practice and raise their children.

She gave the Kappas 65 years of service, was a Cub and Girl Scout leader, and was a member of Red Devils Mothers Club and Dr.'s Wives Auxiliary. She kept the crew happy at many pool parties and card games, feeding the prom crew and soapbox derby team. She was the glue to keep the memories together.
Later in her life she enjoyed traveling with friends at Top Notch, the Antique Club and her Civic Theater troupe.

Independence was paramount. Katie living life on her terms was successful due to the love and support of her friends. Thank you Carl and Eileen; Wanda; Marilyn; the lunch bunch: Ruth, Lou, Louise and Bonnie; Jean and neighbor Bonnie of 50-plus years. There were so many more and Katie appreciated all of you. Katie's undaunting courage and good humor made all of us very humble.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, two children and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and brother, her husband and a son.

There will be a memorial service in the spring at Crown Hill Cemetery, per her wishes.
Contributions may be made to Parkinson's research, the Humane Society or Serenity Hospice Foundation.
