SOUTH BEND - Jack R. Keating, 89, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 4:54 a.m. Sunday, July 15, 2012, in Emeritus at Arborwood, Granger, IN. Jack was born on September 24, 1922, in South Bend, to John and Blanche (Clause) Keating, and was a lifelong resident.

He retired from NIPSCO after 30 years of employment in the sales and marketing department.

On September 8, 1945, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, South Bend, IN, he married Patricia Wass, who preceded him in death on November 25, 2010. Also preceding him in death were his two brothers, Elwood and Larry Keating.

Survivors include his two daughters, Jacquelyn (David) Broome of Castle Rock, CO, and Patricia (Richard) Rice of South Bend, IN; four grandchildren, Jacob (Elaine) Broome, Wendy Broome, Jeffrey (Courtney) Rice and Christopher (Jenny) Rice; and six great-grandchildren, Shanna, Pierce, and Carter Broome, and Alex, Charlie and Annabelle Rice. Funeral services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2012, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive. Friends may call from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

Jack was a graduate of St. Joseph Catholic Grade School and was a 1940 graduate of South Bend Central High School. He was an amateur boxer as a young man. Jack was a decorated Army veteran of WW II. He enjoyed writing, and wrote a column for NIPSCO titled "Once Over Lightly." Jack enjoyed golfing with friends. He had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed a good joke. Jack loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff at Emeritus at Arborwood as well as Sharon, R.N., at Harbor Light Hospice.
