SOUTH BEND - James W. Freel, 84, peacefully passed away on Sunday, April 15, in his home with his family. James was born on October 25, 1922, in South Bend. James married Mary Kay Salkeld on September 3, 1950. Mary Kay survives along with two daughters, Deborah K. (Jay) Landry and Dee Ann (Jim) Friedman; sons, Jack M. (Diane) Freel and Robert W. (Chelly) Freel; and nine grandchildren, Ben, Lauren, Lesley, Katie, Aubrey, Grace, Mary, Naomi and Charlie.

James was preceded in death by his sister, Nadine Jodway.

James retired from Ave Maria Press in 1986. He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, South Bend Elks and the Burkes Men Golf Association at the University of Notre Dame. James was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps, being honorably discharged September 16, 1945.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Bubb Funeral Chapel, 3910 N. Main Street, Mishawaka, where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in St. Augustine Catholic Church, where the family will gather at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Milton Day Care Center, to Hospice of St. Joseph County or to St. Augustine Catholic Church.
