Jack J. Detzler, 83, of Tanglewood Lane, Mishawaka, Ind., formerly of Bristol Avenue, South Bend, died at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 8, in Fountainview Place of Mishawaka. Mr. Detzler was born July 20, 1922, in South Bend, to John J. and Thekla (King) Detzler, and was a lifetime area resident. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Thekla Knoblock; and by his brother, Dickson F. Detzler.

Dr. Detzler retired as a professor of history at Saint Mary's College in 1992, where he had also served as vice president since 1967. He had also been a professor and director of Indiana University Center (IUSB) from 1951 to 1964.

He was a 1940 graduate of South Bend Central High School, received his A.B. with honors from Indiana University in 1943, his A.M. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1946, and his Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1952. Among his scholastic honors he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Delta Kappa and Phi Alpha Theta. His publications include South Bend, 1900-1910, The Awakening of a Small Town; South Bend, 1910-1920, A Decade Dedicated to Reform; South Bend, 1920-1930, The Emergence of a City; contributions to the Encyclopedia Britannica concerning South Bend, Indiana, Mishawaka, Indiana, and Elkhart, Indiana; and various magazine articles and book reviews.

He was a member of the Indiana Historical Society and the Northern Indiana Historical Society and Northern Indiana Historical Society Foundation where he served as president and board member. He was a member of the board of directors of Memorial Hospital, South Bend Chamber of Commerce, and Indiana University Alumni Club in the 1950s and 1960s, and was a board member and secretary for the former Osteopathic Hospital from 1980-85 and St. Joseph County Park Foundation during the 1970s. He was a distinguished Hoosier since 1983, a member of South Bend Rotary Club since 1947, and a board member of the St. Joseph County Public Library from 1985-1998.

There will be no service or visitation. Burial will take place at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. The Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William
