SOUTH BEND - Gilbert Lindsey Vance, 89, of South Bend, died at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010, in Southfield Village following a lengthy illness. Mr. Vance was born April 3, 1920, in South Bend, to the late Blanche E. (Ireland) and Owen C. Vance, and was a lifetime area resident.

On March 15, 1947, in South Bend, he married Janice Jackson, who preceded him in death April 10, 1985. On June 3, 1986, in South Bend, he married Beverly (Engle) Wolfe, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, David L. Vance (Barbara) of Windsor, CO, and Thomas J. Vance (Kathleen) of Portage, MI; step-daughter, Carol Wolfe Neu (Robert) of Pittsburgh, PA; stepson, Donald Wolfe (Eleanor) of Fairfield, IA; and three grandchildren, Kelly Vance Knecht (Rob) of Grand Rapids, MI, Andrew Vance of Peoria, IL, and Evan Neu of Philadelphia, PA.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mardell Rankin and Esther Berry; and by two brothers, Otis C. Vance and Nevin R. Vance.

He retired as vice president and trust officer at the 1st Source Bank after 36 years. Mr. Vance was a member and past president of many community organization boards including First Presbyterian Church, the Morris Park Country Club, the Hearing and Speech Center, the Scholarship Foundation, YMCA Camp Eberhart, United Way, Goodwill Industries, REAL Services, the former Indiana Club, the Indiana Bankers Association and the Memorial Hospital Health Foundation. He was also a member of the board of directors of Shippers Dispatch, Inc., and Mossberg & Company. Mr. Vance was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, proudly serving in General Douglas MacArthur's headquarters in the Pacific Theatre. Private family funeral services will be held.

There will be no visitation. Entombment will take place at Riverview Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 333 W. Colfax Ave., South Bend, IN 46601; to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637; or to the Camp Eberhart Alumni Association, 316 S.
