SOUTH BEND - Roman C. Szymczak, 86, died Tuesday, May 1, 2007, at Regency Place in Fort Wayne. Born in South Bend, IN, he was a graduate of South Bend Central High School in 1938, and was employed at Sobenite Plastics for over 50 years in a supervisory capacity.

He was a proud member of the U.S. Army Medical Corps, serving three years in combat during WW II in North Africa and Italy. He gave faithful service to the University of Notre Dame as an usher supervisor for athletic events, where he served for over 65 years. He was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church and was also a former member of St. Monica Catholic Church in Mishawaka, IN, had served as an usher for over 50 years, and was a long-term member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society in South Bend.

Survivors include children, Thomas (Linda) Szymczak, their children, Laura (Ross) McCord and Savannah; Michelle (Doug) Ferguson, and Emily and Bekka; Tom (Kim) Szymczak and Lauren and Nicholas; Lisa (Jim) Klenner and Taylor, Nicholas and T.J.; Leslie (Joe) Turner and Lanea, Hailey and Lillian; Matthew (Holly) Szymczak and Colby and Carter; Daniel Szymczak and Tyler and Collin; Rachel (Ron) Crider and Cage and Kaiya; daughter, Marilyn (Jerry) Walsh, and children, Kevin (Lori) Walsh and Katie and Alex; Kimberly (Kevin) Branham and Tessa; daughter, Nancy (Jim) Konopinski, and children, Christy (Shane) Betzer and Bailey and Briana, Eric (Pebble) Konopinski and Nate and Micahyia; Jenny Althoff and her fiancé, Greg Doms; a sister-in-law, Lorraine Szymczak Caligiuri; and a brother, Eugene (Alice) Szymczak.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Virginia, who was the love of his life, and by brothers, Chester, Walter and Richard.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 6, 2007, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a vigil service will be held at 6:30 p.m. A funeral prayer service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 7, 2007, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home. Entombment will follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend, IN, where military services will also be conducted.
