SOUTH BEND - N. Jean Derbin, 90, of South Bend, IN, died at 8:05 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 30, 2010) at the home of her daughter in Granger. She was born June 18, 1920 in St. Joseph County, IN to Marion & Lottie (Logan) Pickerl.

She married John Derbin on March 4, 1944 in South Bend, IN. He died on January 17, 1981 in South Bend, IN.

Surviving is a daughter, Janice (Michael) Mack of Granger, IN, a son, James Derbin of South Bend, IN, a granddaughter, Emily Mack of Granger, IN and a step granddaughter, Michaela Mack of Owosso, MI.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Logan C. Pickerl and a sister, Mary M. Pickerl.

Jean graduated from South Bend Central High School and The South Bend College of Commerce.

Jean retired from the Torrington Company in 1986 where she was the Supervisor of word processing. After being retired for 10 days, Jean went back to work and was employed by the United Way of St. Joseph County for another 22 years. Jean finally retired at the age of 88. If you ask people what words best describe Jean, you will hear; fun, loving, giving, energetic, ornery, a good cook and a strong Christian woman. You could always count on her to be by your side with her support. She loved her family and friends and was always willing to give every minute of every day to them. Jean was always full of energy and rarely turned down any opportunity to be part of any party or social event. Jean will be missed by all that knew her.

A Celebration of Life Gathering Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday (December 11, 2010) at the Timberland Bible Church, 16623 S.R. 23, South Bend, IN. Pastors John Railton and Andy Cisneros will preside. Cremation will take place with burial at a later date in Edwardsburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to The Timberland Bible Church or the American Cancer Society. Elkhart Cremation Services is entrusted with arrangements.
