SOUTH BEND - Mrs. Cozzie Mae Winston Scott, age 91, passed away at 11:20 p.m. on Sunday, October 2, 2011 at Ironwood Health & Rehabilitation, South Bend, Indiana. Cozzie Mae was born to the union of Caiphus and Delilah Dunlap on April 4, 1920 in Paris, Tennessee. Coming from Paris in 1929 she moved to South Bend.

She graduated from Central High School with high honors in 1938.

She was united in holy matrimony to Napoleon Winston on January 16, 1941 in Edwardsburg, Michigan. She was an entrepreneur, operating a laundry business first; then she operated her own restaurant and finally light industrial landlord properties. She also worked for Real Services for five years as a foster grandparent for the Juvenile Correctional Justice System. She was a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church for over 50 years serving as the former president of the Young Women's Chaste Circle. Her passions were fishing, gardening, animals, mentoring young women, singing in the church and sewing. She also was a member of the Household of Ruth since 1949.

Cozzie was preceded in death by her parents, Caiphus and Delilah Dunlap, her husband, Napoleon Winston, two sons, Milton Winston and Dunlap Scott, one brother, Lawrence Tharpe and a sister, Louise Fisher.

Survivors left to cherish her memory include three daughters, Sharon (Pastor Prentis) Lewis and Ruth Winston both of South Bend, Linda (Cecil) Winston-Young of Vancover, Washington; seven sons, Richard (Murdell) Winston of Sarasota, Florida, Dr. Reed Winston of Baltimore, Maryland, Johnnie (Esther) Winston of Las Vegas, Nevada, Raymond (Janice) Winston of Fergunson, Missouri, Thomas (Paulette) Winston of Atlanta, Georgia, Glenn (Nichole) Winston of Harrisburg, PA., and Sterling (Rita) Winston of Baltimore, Maryland; 35 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, a great-great grandchild; sister in law, Cathy Tharpe of Indianapolis, IN., along with a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 10, 2011 at Pilgrim Baptist Church for Mrs. Cozzie Mae Winston Scott with burial following at Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Alford's Mortuary on Sunday, October 9, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Arrangements have been entrusted with Alford's Mortuary where messages of condolences may be e-mailed to Alford smortuary@att.net c/o: Cozzie Mae Winston Scott family.
