John P. Daly

John P. Daly, 87, of South Bend, died Sunday morning, March 5, in Memorial Hospital. He was born January 1, 1919, in South Bend, to Vincent and Margaret (Carroll) Daly, who preceded him in death. He attended St. Joseph Grade School and graduated from South Bend Central High School.

John was a member of Holy Cross Parish. During World War II John was a Marine drill sergeant at Camp Pendleton, San Diego, California. In addition, he was stationed at Pearl Harbor and was aboard the U.S.S. Mississippi. He took great pride in the Marines and their service to this country. 

On February 6, 1954, he married Mathilda K. Giefing, who died January 22, 1988. Surviving are five children, Patti St. Clair, Mike Daly and Peggy Daly, all of South Bend, Cathy Daly of Michigan City and John P. Daly Jr., Westville, Indiana. Grandchildren include Katie, Pierce and Drake.

John was preceded in death by three sisters, Francis Daly, Elizabeth Busher and Louise Naughton; and three brothers, Joseph, James and Andrew.

He was a longtime employee of the South Bend Tribune and upon retirement in 1984 was pressroom foreman. He con-tributed cartoons to the Tribune as well. John had a wonderful sense of humor and never lacked for a story to tell. His lifelong love of nature was illustrated in his wood carvings. He loved Notre Dame football and the Chicago White Sox. 

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 10, in the HICKEY Funeral Home, 17131 Cleveland Road. Interment will be held at a later date at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to services Friday in the funeral home.
