Esther Mae (Kreps) Batten Mar. 4, 1921 - May 16, 2014 SOUTH BEND - Esther Mae (Kreps) Batten, 93, passed away Friday evening at Golden Care Assisted Facility. Esther was born in South Bend to the late Lewis and Minnie Kreps and has resided in South Bend all of her life.

Esther was a graduate of South Bend Central High School.

On April 11, 1944 she was united in marriage to Vernon L. Batten, who preceded her in death in 1997. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Karen.

She retired as a Library Assistant for the law school of Notre Dame after 20 years of service.

Esther is survived by sons, Dennis of South Bend, Terry (Marcia) of Niles; and a daughter, Cheryl (Chris) McCarthy of South Bend. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Greg (Kristine) Batten of Rochester, Indiana, Jeff (Jennifer) Batten of Osceola, Frank (Jill) Holtsclaw of Mishawaka, William Holtsclaw of South Bend, Krystal (Andrew) Fanin of South Bend, Kathryne (Derick) Vigansky of South Bend; and 14 great- grandchildren. Esther's love for her family was the focus of her life. She enjoyed having the family over to celebrate the holidays and watching the grandchildren/great-grandchildren in a school or athletic event.

A devoted fan of Notre Dame sports, Esther would always be right there cheering on the Irish. As a mother of a mentally disabled child in the 1950's, she advocated the need for a school that would support the parents of special needs children. Her ambitions helped create the founding and start of "Logan School", and The Council For The Retarded. Esther remained a "Friend Of Logan" for all of her life.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 20th at the McGann Hay, Morning Star Chapel, 21275 Cleveland Rd. South Bend, IN at 4:00PM, with visitation 2 hours before the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to LOGAN. To send condolences, please visit www.McGannHay.com.
