EDGAR C. "EDGIE" POWERS

April 9, 1921 - April 2, 2008
SOUTH BEND - Edgar C. "Edgie" Powers Jr., 86, of South Bend, passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2008, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend. Edgie was born on April 9, 1921, in South Bend, to the late Edgar C. and Hilda P. (Miller) Powers Sr.

Edgie was a graduate of South Bend Central High School.

While in school he played basketball under the direction of the legendary coach John R. Wooden.

On March 25, 1944, he married the former Dorothy L. Reis. Together they shared and cherished their 64 years of marriage.

Edgie served his country proudly during WWII in the U.S. Army. While he was in the Army he received the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with two bronze stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one star and the World War II Victory Medal.

Edgie was a founding partner of Time Realty and a Licensed Real Estate Broker. He was also a member of the South Bend - Mishawaka Board of Realtors. Edgie was a lifelong South Bend area tennis player. He competed in and won many of the City Championships. Having 27 years of experience, he was a certified official of the Indiana High School Athletic Association. Edgie was a member of Sacred Heart Parish Crypt on the campus of the University of Notre Dame and an avid Notre Dame, Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears fan.

Surviving him are his loving wife, Dorothy L. Powers of South Bend; his daughter, Kim A. Powers, and her companion, Gene Cavich of Columbus, IN.; his daughter-in-law, Nancy Powers of South Bend; two loving grandchildren, Matthew Powers and Sarah Johnston, and her husband, Chad of South Bend; one great-grandson, Kevin Johnston; and Edgie's loving brother, Jim Powers and his wife, Marilyn of South Bend.

Edgie was preceded in death by his parents and on October 7, 2004, by his son, Kevin M. Powers.

Friends may visit with his family on Sunday, April 6th, from 2 to 6 p.m. in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend. A Mass Of Christian Burial will be conducted Monday, April 7th, at 3:30 p.m. in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, University of Notre Dame, with Rev. John Riley officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.
