SOUTH BEND - Frank Louis Nemeth, 88, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, July 7, 2009. He was born 23 Jan. 1921, in South Bend, IN, to Vincze and Helen Anna (Nemeth), the oldest of four children, and was a lifelong resident of South Bend.

He is survived by his two brothers, Charles of Albuquerque, NM, and Vince of Rockford, IL, and his one sister, Lenny (Donald) Schramski of South Bend.

Frank L. graduated from South Bend (Central) High School in June 1939.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on 9 Oct. 1942, and finally, in Norfolk, VA, boarded the USS ESSEX CV-9 aircraft carrier on 8 May, 1943, and served in the Pacific Theatre until 1 Dec., 1945. He was honorably discharged at Great Lakes Naval Training Station on 20 Dec., 1945.

He married Miss Jo Elizabeth Nemeth on 26 Sept., 1946. They raised a daughter, Barbara Jo (Bruce) Bernier of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and a son, Frank Michael (Elizabeth) of Fairfax, Iowa. Jo Elizabeth died in Jan. 1994. Frank is survived by their two children and five grandchildren, Anne Bernier, Shannon (Ben) Davis, David Nemeth, Emily Nemeth and Jane Nemeth.

Frank L. worked for 40 years as a journeyman electrician in Local 153 of the IBEW, retiring in 1986. He painted pastel portraits as a hobby and volunteered at the St. Joseph County Archives. He completed the course in Commercial Art, Illustration and Design from the famous Artists School in 1968. He was active in the South Bend Area Genealogical Society. Frank was an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and also attended services at Grace Chapel in Crumstown with his companion, Zita Rydzinski. Frank L. was a devoted family man and will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today, July 9, 2009, at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 5 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 10, 2009, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, South Bend. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, IN.
