Harry Virgil Kardel, 89, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, December 11, 2008 in Healthwin Specialized Care Facility. Harry was born on December 25, 1918 in Detroit, MI. He retired from the South Bend Community School Corporation in 1985, working primarily at Darden Elementary School. He had also been employed with Studebakers for 25 years, until the company closed in 1963.

On January 7, 1939 in South Bend, he married Viola Ruth Kretchmer, who preceded him in death on September 17, 1997.

Survivors include his two daughters, Sonja (Charles) Allsop of Niles, MI and Sherry (Jerry) Black of South Bend, IN; his son, Angelo (Emily) Kardel of Tuscon, AZ; a special niece, Patricia (Ron) Chesnut of Banning, CA; four grandchildren, Dana (Gregg) Miller, Kurt (Vynessa) Allsop, Brian Black, and Christine Black; two step-grandchildren, Amanda (Jack) Sorensen and Ian (Karen) Carmichael; seven great-grandchildren, Sarah Abbood, Jordan Miller, Brooke Miller, MaKayla Black, Anthony Harris, Jr., Maxwell Allsop and Samantha Allsop; five step great-grandchildren, T.J. Riley, TaNesia Ross, Alexandria Ross, Cole Carmichael, and Alexis Sorensen; and one sister, Dorothy (Gerry) Upton of Marana, AZ.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, December 15, 2008 in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Monday in the funeral home. 

Harry was a 1937 graduate of Central High School.

He was a W.W. II Army Air Corps Veteran and a member of the former V.F.W. Post #624 in Roseland. He was a member of the Clay Township Civic and Democratic Club. Harry was a boxer in his teen years, and a member of the Golden Gloves Team sponsored by Studebaker and the South Bend Boxing Club. Memorial contributions may be made to the Clay Township Civic and Democratic Club.
