John T. Buczkowski
John T. Buczkowski, 86, of Mishawaka, Indiana, passed away on the evening of Friday, Feb. 10, in the loving care of Regency Place of South Bend following a courageous battle with emphysema. John was born on November 3, 1919, in South Bend, Indiana, to John J. and Helen (Kolupa) Buczkowski.
Mr. Buczkowski worked for many years at the Studebaker Plant. He retired from the Ward Baking Company as a member of the Teamsters Union. John worked as a driver for the Department of Athletics at the University of Notre Dame until early in 2005. He was a member of the VFW 8748, American Legion 357, and Polish Falcons of America.
On April 28, 1941, John married Mardelle Fristoe, who preceded him in death after 60 years of marriage. Also preceding him in death were his brothers, Edward and Irvin Buczkowski; sisters, Helen Meredith, Lottie Filarski, Cecilia Laskowski and Sylvia Korpal; and son, John Richard Buczkowski.
He is survived by his sister, Loretta Rompala of Spring Hill, Florida; his daughter, Constance R. (Fletcher A.) Songe of Pascagoula, Mississippi; his son, Terry B. (Carol A.) Buczkowski of Jacksonville, Florida; and daughter-in-law, Rita Buck of South Bend, Indiana. Also surviving are his seven grandchildren, Stephen (Lisa) Songe and Matthew Songe of Pascagoula, Mississippi, Stacey (Joseph) Sharp of Kennesaw, Georgia, Rebecca J.M. Buczkowski and Melissa Peper of Jacksonville, Florida, Sarah Waibel of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, and John Richard (Stacey) Buck of Bonita Springs, Florida. John has six great-grandchildren.
John Buczkowski was a proud, active, and beloved member of the Notre Dame family. He and Mardelle worked at the university for over forty years of combined service.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, February 16, 2006, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, where a Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday, February 17. 2006, in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart Church on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. Associate Pastor, Rev. James Rigert, C.S.C., will be presiding. The family will have a private graveside service at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made as Mass offerings or to the St. Anthony's Orphanage and Children's Home, addressed to 2205 Avian Place, Jacksonville, FL 32224.
