MARILEE (STANZ) CLARKE

March 1, 1919 - June 26, 2010
SOUTH BEND - Marilee Stanz Clarke, 91, passed on June 26th in Mishawaka. Marilee was born March 1, 1919, in Chicago, to the late Emil W. and Hilda C. (Zastrow) Stanz. She married the late Horace B. Clarke in 1942.

Marilee is survived by her daughter, Sherry Clarke of Mishawaka; son, Charles Clarke of South Bend; and her sister, Shirley Geraghty of Granger.

Marilee graduated from Central High School in 1937, and helped plan their class reunions. She attended Northwestern University and graduated from the National College of Education of Evanston, Illinois, in 1941. She taught kindergarten and primary grades in South Bend in the 1940s and 1950s.

Marilee was an active volunteer for the South Bend Symphony Orchestra League, hosting pre-concert talks, showcase fundraisers, and soliciting subscriptions to the symphony concerts. She loved music, and could play popular songs from ragtime to contemporary show tunes on the piano. She was also very active in her church, First Church of Christ, Scientist, South Bend, serving two terms as Reader, teaching Sunday School, playing the Sunday School organ in her stocking feet, as well as serving on the church executive board and as music chairman. Marilee traveled extensively through Europe, the United States, Egypt and sub-Saharan Africa. She supported and appreciated the fine arts, collecting art works by local and other artists. She could often be found at the polls on election day, and had a lifelong interest in politics and current events. Her family and friends will always cherish her genuine interest in and affection for all she met, her generous service and spirit in her many volunteer activities, her wit and infectious laugh, and her deep faith in God .

A memorial service will be held in the Bubb Funeral Chapel on Thursday, July 1st, at 7:00 p.m. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to First Church of Christ, Scientist, 1237 N. Ironwood, South Bend, or to the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, 127 N. Michigan.
