Wava Lorene Michel, 93, passed away Saturday, July 3, 2010 at her son’s residence in New Haven, IN. Wava was the only child of Edward and Mary Anna (Martindale) Steinigeweg. She was born in Wabash, IN on May 5, 1917 and raised in South Bend, IN from age 4. 

Wava graduated in 1935 from South Bend Central High School, when John Wooden was the high school boys basketball coach there. She graduated as an R.N. in 1938 from South Bend Epworth (now Memorial) Hospital. She took post graduate training in operating room supervision at Cook County Hospital, Chicago. She then became the Supervisor of the Operating Rooms at Epworth Hospital. She graduated from Indiana University in 1947 with a B.S. in Nursing Education.

She has been a resident of Fort Wayne since 1948, except for 5 years in Torrance, California. In California she helped to host teas for Pat Nixon in 1962, when Pat’s husband Richard Nixon was running for Governor. In Fort Wayne she was active in AAUW, PEO, the Southeast Family YMCA Board of Directors, and the Women’s Association of Calvary Third United Presbyterian Church. She worked at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne from 1975 to 1981. She remained an active golfer until age 88, playing in the women’s 9-hole leagues at McMillan, Brookwood, and Interclub. Other hobbies included playing accordion, piano and organ as well as oil painting, sewing and gardening.

She is survived by her 3 sons: David (Donna) of New Haven; William (Lourdes) of The Woodlands, TX; and James (Clodagh) of Miami, FL; 10 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands Dick Renner in 1944 after a 3 year marriage, and Norman Michel in 1971 after 24 years of marriage.

Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Tipton, IN. Service is at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, July 7 at D. O. McComb and Sons Maplewood Park Funeral Home, 4017 Maplecrest Road. Calling is at 10:00 AM Wednesday and from 3 to 8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
