Jerome F Wendel

Jerome F. Wendel, 82, of Traverse City, MI, passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 in the Traverse Victorian Senior Living Community, Traverse City, MI.

He was one of 13 children, born on June 3, 1932 to the late Fred W. Wendel, Sr. and Elvera B. (Lollman) Wendel. Along with his parents; he was also preceded in death by four brothers, Fred W. Wendel, Jr. of South Bend, IN; Robert D. Wendel of South Bend, IN; James P. Wendel of Arizona; Daniel L. Wendel of Jacksonville, FL; and four sisters, Patricia J. Swanson of South Bend, IN; Doris J. Huber of South Bend, IN; Mary J. Wolfe of South Bend, IN; and Barbara L. Mitchell of Seattle, WA.

Jerome is survived by four sisters, Shirley A. Slabaugh of South Bend, IN; Lois M. Haynes of Dallas, TX; Audrey M. Jack of Dallas, TX; Suzanne R. Cleaver of Twp. of Washington, NJ; many nieces & nephews; and many great-nieces & great-nephews.

He attended Holy Cross Grade School and Central High School in South Bend, continuing his education and graduating from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. Jerome received his degree from Kent State University in Geology and was employed with Betz Laboratories in Ashland, OH. He then continued his career as a Geologist for the State of Michigan, where he worked for the Department of Natural Resources in Lansing, MI, and retired from there on November 1, 1991.

Jerry loved the outdoors and built a log cabin from scratch on acreage he purchased as an investment in Cedar, MI. Being a Geologist, he also dabbled in other minerals, oil, and metal investments as a hobby. Jerry was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War.

He was a wonderful son, brother, and uncle and brought a lot of laughs and fun to his family over the years. He made friends easily and leaves behind many peers, who cared for him deeply.

Visitation will be from 9 – 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, IN, followed by a Catholic Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home, with Rev. Paul F. Doyle, C.S.C. officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, South Bend, IN.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations may be made to the: Alzheimer's Association, Hospice of Michigan, or Traverse City Senior Community Center, Traverse City, MI.
