Walter L. Szymczak, 56, of 57150 Crumstown Hwy. died at 11 p.m. Sunday at home after a lengthy illness.
He was a private building contractor and an employee of Stanz Cheese Co.Born on May 7, 1925, in South Bend, lie had lived here all his life.

On Sept 21, 1925, in South Bend, he married Lorraine Zalas, who survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Patricia Nichols of Richmond, Va: a son Kenneth of South Bend; three grandchildren; and three brothers, Roman, Chester and Eugene, all of South Bend.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Polish National Catholic Church.Rev. Edwin Phillips, pastor, will officiate.Burial w ill be in St. Joseph Cemetery.Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Kaniewski and Sons Funeral Home, where a parish rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

He was a World War II veteran, a member of Pulaski Post 357 American Legion, Eagles Lodge 435, Lodge 294 F&AM and the Scottish Rite.
