Joan Agnes Hoffman (McCabe) - Class Of 1944 VIEW PROFILE

Joan Agnes Hoffman (McCabe)

JOAN A. (HOFFMAN) MCCABE

Holland, Ohio - Joan A. McCabe, 87, formerly of Poughkeepsie NY, most recently of Holland OH, was called to rest on Thursday, August 15, 2013. Surrounded by loving family & friends, she has now joined her husband Richard and son Michael, both of whom she cherished.

Joan was born on Jan 26, 1926 in South bend, IN to John and Joan (Hirl) Hoffman. Raised during the great depression, she learned to live sparingly and save everything. In 1943 she graduated from South Bend Central High School where she was privileged to have basketball's coaching legend John Wooden as a teacher. She met the love of her life, Richard R. McCabe , a University of Notre Dame Law student at a dance. They were married On Aug 22, 1951. As a newlywed she relocated to Poughkeepsie, NY, where her husband, brother in law and father in law formed the McCabe & McCabe Law firm.

Joan had a passion for being a homemaker and was the stay at home mom to four rambunctious boys. Joan's greatest love was her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend; simply put, "Joan had a heart of gold." She had an adventurous spirit, devilish sense of humor and knack for one liner's and witty sayings. She loved to cook, bake and entertain her family and friends, taking several courses at the Culinary Institute of America to hone her skills. Joan was devoted to her Christian faith and spent much of her free time volunteering at St. Martin De Porres parish and Birthright International, providing support to women distressed by unplanned pregnancies. She also volunteered in Spackenkill High School's cafeteria and worked at CVS in the Galleria Mall. She was an avid traveler and had affection for card games, chocolate and Southern Comfort manhattans. She will forever be remembered as "someone who would do anything for anybody." Although the heartache of losing her will never go away, we know she is at peace.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, son Michael and daughter in law Kathleen (Sullivan) McCabe. She is survived by three sons, Thomas (Debbie) McCabe of Fredericksburg VA, John (Janet) McCabe of Hyde Park NY, and Dr. Patrick McCabe of Perrysburg OH, Brother John (Jackie) Hoffman of South Bend IN, Sister Mary (Jack) Balint of Mishawaka IN, 11 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

The family gratefully acknowledges the care provided by Lutheran Village at Wolf Creek, Debbie Lester & Hospice of NW Ohio.
