ROBERT W. GREEN

May 28, 1926 - Jan. 24, 2013
SOUTH BEND - Robert William Green, 86, of South Bend, died peacefully on Thursday, January 24th, in his residence following a lengthy illness. Mr. Green was born May 28, 1926, in South Bend, to the late Emma (Petersen) and Thomas Green, and was a lifetime area resident.

On December 26, 1948, in South Bend, he married Geraldine "Jerry" Decker, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Jodi Smith and Jill Crowley, both of Scottsdale, AZ; two sons, John Green (Kelly) of Lakeville, IN, and James Green (Lacy) of Niles, MI; six grandchildren, Kevin Crowley, Taya and George Green, and Kyle, Blaine and Travis Messick; and two sisters, Ramona Kahn (Roland) and Beverly Seigel, both of Scottsdale.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Judy Russell, and a brother, Tom Green.

Bob was a graduate of South Bend Central High School in 1944.

While in high school at the age of 15, Bob was preparing tax forms at Engel's Drug Store. He was also a Tribune "paper boy." Immediately after graduation, Bob enlisted in the Army and after infantry training became a member of the 101st Airborne as a paratrooper, from which he was honorably discharged in May 1946. He met Jerry at Clear Lake, MI.

He attended Carthage College, Carthage, Illinois, and graduated with honors from Denver University, Denver, CO, in 1950. Returning to South Bend, he was hired by Clete Chizek to work in the accounting firm of Crowe, Chizek. He became a partner in 1954 and then in 1962 became a co-founder of Crowe-Chizek, Inc. He retired in 1990.

He was very proud to have his grandson, Kevin Crowley, hired by the firm this past year. He was a devoted family man. His children and grandchildren adored him. He taught all to swim and never passed an amusement park. There were many trips to Florida, which always included beach time and Disneyworld time. Morris Park and pool was a great place for teaching all to swim. Bob, an owner with the family of Village Green Mobile Home Park, had many happy employees. He was a kind and generous owner and will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 28th, in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Road, with Rev. Jeff Zell of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church officiating. Committal services and entombment with military honors will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. The family will receive friends today, January 27th, in the funeral home from 2 until 5 p.m. If you care to make a donation in Bob's memory, please make it to the charity of your choice. Family and friends may send e-mail condolences at www.welsheimer.com.
