SOUTH BEND - Albert J. Hoover, 93, passed away February 20, 2007, at 7:30 a.m. in his home. Albert was born January 30, 1914, in South Bend, to the late Ralph and Inez (Hecht) Hoover. He was also preceded in death by his two brothers, Daniel and Ralph, and his two sisters, Mary Sweeney and Jane Nichols.

On April 19, 1941, he married Bernice Howe in Chelsea, MI. They were happily married for over 65 years. She survives along with their two sons, Dwight Hoover of Naples, FL, and Tim Hoover of Vandalia, MI; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Carol Francis of South Bend, Joanna Hoover of South Bend, Esther (Ray) Haack of St. Joseph, MI, and Betty McIntire of Dripping Springs, TX; and several nieces and nephews.

Al loved birds, animals, flowers, and was an avid fisherman. He always nursed with his gentle hands animals in need back to health. Nature has lost a true friend and a pioneer conservationist.

Visitation will be on Friday, February 23, 2007, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 Mayflower Road, South Bend. Cremation will take place, with burial to follow at Highland Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637; or to the Humane Society of St. Joseph County, 2506 Grape Road, Mishawaka, IN 46545.
