SOUTH BEND - Edward F. Vande Zande, 87, of South Bend, passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2012, in his home. He was born on September 11, 1924, in South Bend, to the late Felix and Martha (Scherpereel) Vande Zande.

On May 7, 1949, he married the former Bernedina Keultjes at Christ the King Catholic Church. Along with his loving wife of 62 years, he is survived by his sons, Michael (Cheryl) of Bridgman, MI, and Stephen (Denise) of South Bend; three grandchildren, Bryce of South Bend, Lea of Chicago and Lilee of Bridgman, MI; two step-grandchildren, Sean and Shannon Hoyt; three brothers, Eugene (Pat) of South Bend, Jack of Edwardsurg, MI, and Robert (Billie) of Ft. Wayne, IN; and by two sisters-in-law, Julie Vande Zande and Joan Keultjes, both of South Bend.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Ron Vande Zande.

Edward graduated from the former Central High School in the class of 1943. He also graduated from Acme Institute of Technology in 1958. Edward served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946, serving in the European Theater.

After he was discharged from the Army, he took flying lessons and received his private pilots license. He also enjoyed radio-controlled planes. He worked as a Tool Designer for South Bend Lathe for 34 years before retiring in 1989. He was a parishioner of Christ the King Catholic Church since 1949. Edward was a former Adult Leader for Boy Scouts of America, Troop 451, for six years, Harvest House, and a 15-year volunteer at Healthwin. Edward enjoyed traveling, and after his sons were older he took his family to the western states where they camped in the Rocky Mountain and Yellowstone National Parks. He also took his family to Florida and fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. In his later years, he and Bernedina visited 49 of the 50 states, always enjoying the natural beauty and history of each state. They were blessed to visit Mexico from the mountains down to the Pacific Ocean. They truly loved the natural beauty and the people and their culture. They also traveled to Canada more than once, and traveled from Nova Scotia to Vancouver Island. Always enjoying the history and natural beauty, especially the Canadian Rockies. Edward was an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing his fruits, vegetables and plants with neighbors, family and friends. He was also a model railroader for much of his life. Edward and Bernedina lived in the town of Indian Village, where he was Trustee for the town from 1960 to 1975. He was also on the Board of Zoning.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm today, March 23, 2012, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. A Mass of Christan Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 24, 2012, in Christ the King Church, South Bend, with burial to follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, IN.
