Elizabeth J. Van Slager Martin

Elizabeth J. Martin, 90, of Elkhart, died Saturday, June 27.

The South Bend native was born Aug. 31, 1924, to Andrew and Elizabeth (Czigler) Vanslager and later graduated from Central High School.

On Oct. 2, 1948, she married Thomas W. Martin in South Bend. He preceded her in death Jan. 23, 2012, after 63 years of marriage.

Elizabeth was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and the Rosary Sodality. She enjoyed reading, walking and bicycling, as well as music, dancing and playing cards with family and friends.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Irene Ungurait.

Elizabeth is survived by her daughters, Jacquelyn Heber of Milwaukee and Rosemary (Mark) Peschke of Camden; grandchildren Chris (Cheree) Herber, who is serving in the U.S. Air Force in Seoul, South Korea, and Sara (Ryan) Flora of Columbus, Ga.; her great-grandchildren, Heidi and Elise; and her brother, William (Marsha) Vanslager of South Bend.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola, with Father Jason Freiburger officiating.

Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

The family’s preferred memorials are to St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1405 N. Main St., Elkhart, or the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 19, 205 Middleton Run Road, Elkhart
