EVELYN M. (METZLER) ZUMBRUN

Evelyn Marie Zumbrun, 90, of Columbia City, died at 9:25 a.m. Friday, Dec. 11, 2015 at Miller's Merry Manor where she had been a resident since Sept. 15.

She was born April 30, 1925 in Madison Township, St. Joe County, a daughter of Roy L. and Amanda M. (Miller) Metzler. She attended school in Lakeville, Hamlet, Lydick before graduating from Central High School in South Bend where she accompanied choirs and light operas. She also graduated from the Fine Arts School of Music in South Bend and attended Manchester College. She participated in numerous master's classes and seminars in the fine arts.

On Oct. 28, 1945, she was united in marriage to Paul E. Zumbrun. They resided near Columbia City their entire married life except three years in Lenoir, N.C., and two years in Falkirk, Scotland. Paul preceded her in death May 11, 2014.

Throughout her life, Evelyn served as a substitute teacher in Whitley County, Columbia City Schools and South Bend. She also worked in the office for State Farm Insurance, Columbia City Dairy Queen and while in Scotland as office and personnel manager for Blue Bell Inc.

Evelyn played for many weddings and funerals, and was well known for her work as a piano and organ instructor. She served at Grace Lutheran Church as organist for 26 years and played organ for many churches in the area. She directed community and church choirs in Columbia City and Fort Wayne. She was a member of the Organ Guild and Sigma Eta Fine Arts Sorority serving as past national president and past president of the local Epsilon Chapter in addition to chorus director for both.

She served on the local, District and National level of the North Carolina and Indiana Church of the Brethren and was a member of the Blue River and Columbia City congregations.

Surviving relatives include four children, Linda M. Zumbrun, of Wabash, Brent E. (Brenda) Zumbrun, of South Bend, Nancy J. (Larry) Ford, of Goshen and Jane A. Zumbrun, of Columbia City; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Blickenstaff.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam. The visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
